BIRDING This 366-ha nature reserve protects not only the fragile shoreline and sand-dunes of Cape Recife, but also the many organisms that rely on these habitats. The marine, shore, bush and freshwater habitats attract over 100 bird species, including large concentration of waders in summer. This is also an excellent location for observing tern species. Location: Port Elizabeth. Access: In Port Elizabeth follow Marine Drive through Summerstrand, following signposts to Cape Recife. Obtain permits for vehicles at the Happy Valley beach manager's office. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: Paths; bird-watching hides; the 9 km Roseate Tern Trail Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
